South Cyprus
Southern Cyprus has been a popular destination for travellers and home buyers for many years and this is down to the hospitality and friendliness of the locals. Whenever you visit you will hear the words "kalosorisate and "kopiaste" which translate as welcome and come joand in us.
Most of the visitors to the island are from the UK and many people return year after year. This has contributed to South Cyprus becoming one of the most popular destinations for a second home. With nearly 6k sq km to explore Cyprus has something to offer everyone from pine clad mountains, stunning beaches, lively nightlife and many places of historical interest.
The South Cypriot region is split into 4 cities as follows:-
Larnaca - a popular resort with a beautiful palm lined promenade and marina
Limassol - the 2nd largest city in the region with a very busy nightlife
Paphos - is great for exploring archaeological sites and a busy fishing port
Nicosia - the capital and business centre of the region
Cuisine in southern Cyprus has a Greek influence and you will find lots of fresh fish and seafood on the menu. Other traditional dishes include lountza, afelia, souvlaki and sheftalia. Another favourite is Halloumi cheese which is made from sheep and goats milk. Halloumi originated in Cyprus and dates back to medieval times.
There are many traditional crafts still in practice in south Cyprus such as lace making which you will see for sale throughout the island. During the summer months especially in the small village of Lefkara you will often see the lace makers sitting outside in groups making Lefkaritika which is very delicate and intricate lace. Examples of this lace and silverware are on display at the South Cyprus museum.
